Quick Duck Hunting Tips for the Beginner

going-duck-huntingWith the 2009-10 duck hunting season fast approaching, and you still aren’t where to start this season? Or maybe you’ve done your fair share of duck hunting in the past, but keep coming home empty handed? Regardless of your current situation, here are a couple of quick tips that will make this years season successful.

First of all keep an open mind. Too many people believe they know it all when it comes to duck hunting. You will never learn anything new if you aren’t open minded. You can learn a great deal from watching and listening to hunters who have been doing this for years.  Sure, to a beginner a lot of what they are talking about might not make sense at first, but it doesn’t have to. What these seasoned hunters have been doing for years has brought them success, and it could work for you.

Second, get the right equipment. Your first thought might be that the most expensive equipment is probably the best, but in most cases this isn’t necessarily true. What some manufactures think might be a great concept or an idea, might be a horrible one in the field. Consult with some fellow hunters before making a purchase; it will save you time and money.

Third, decide which hunting methods work best for you. It’s common knowledge that no people are exactly alike, and that applies to virtually everything we do. Some hunters rely on duck decoys, while other hunters rely on their preferred calls. Try both and see what works best for you. There are many varieties of calls available for virtually every species of duck or goose. You can get them through catalogs, in the stores, or through the Internet.

As far as duck decoys go, it can be a very tricky process at times. Most decoys are made of plastic and made to resemble a certain species of duck. When floated properly, they can attract ducks into the shooting range. There are many opinions amongst hunters over what decoys work the best and they way to set them up. What it really comes down to is getting the most accurate decoy and facing them in the appropriate direction. Ducks, like all other birds, have a very keen sense and aren’t easily fooled. They will avoid landing anywhere where they will feel unsafe.

In the end, you can get duck hunting tips from anyone, this doesn’t necessarily guarantee you success. Ultimately you will have to decide on your own what works best for you. Your strategy for success might be completely different then the next person, and that’s OK. The basic tips provided here can give you a good start on your road to making sure you do not return home empty handed this season.
